I have heard good things about the keyboards that TypeMatrix makes but I have not had a chance to check one out yet. The keyboards they make aren’t your standard stuff…. The portability aspect really interests me as I am looking for a good portable Dvorak keyboard that I can take with me.
When I first started learning to type Dvorak I was using a freeware tutor utility, It worked but I wanted something better. Then I found the Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor. I love this software! Vikings are cool!
If you use iTunes you can learn to type using the lyrics to your songs!!
They also have a great free typing test on their site, Check it out!
Typedvorak.com a place where everyone can share their experiances with learning and using the Dvorak keyboard layout, So I’ll start with me…
I have worked in the IT field for many years but have always been a hunt and peck typist. I could type pretty fast that way but it wasn’t at all efficient. It really showed when using an instant messenger. My colleges would type so fast they were on to something else before I could reply! (which always made the conversations very confusing) I really needed to learn to type.
I Never took a typing class in school, but have attempted to learn to touch type on my own… usually a couple days of: adf adf adf jjk jjk jjk llk llk llk….. and I went back to hunt and peck.
A few months ago I tried again, I found some free typing program and began…. adf adf asd asd…. my wrists and hands hurt, but I was determined this time, then somehow I stumbled across something about the Dvorak keyboard, I had heard of it before but this time I actually read about it… then I started searching and searching, reading everything I could about it. I decided right then. “I’m going Dvorak”
asd asd became aoe aoe, and already my wrists felt some relief….
I’m no speed demon yet but faster than I ever have been for sure!
So pop off and rearrange those keys and tell us your story!
Sure I know you can quickly and easily change your keyboard to a Dvorak layout using the ‘regional and language’ settings in windows, but what if you don’t want to do that? or need to use someone else’s computer for a while? Or, If you are like me and are work in Information Technology and have caused some tension with your co-workers because you changed all the servers to Dvorak and they couldn’t log in….
