I've just bought one of the new USB typematrix keyboards with two skins - dvorak and semi-blank (to help with touch-typing).

First impressions are good, it's a solid, quality board with good action.

The hardware dvorak is a really neat feature as it allows you to switch to a dvorak mapping in places like the bios or when using a machine set to qwerty.

The main thing is that the straight columns do seem to work and the central enter and backspace keys are a good design. Recommended.

I am a designer/illustrator that for decades had simply formed my own organic brand of fast glance and peck. It was effective and served my needs for the first 18 or so years of what has become heavy computer use.

I took a typing class when I was 12, and I had rather long fingers, which one would think would help my typing, but at the time I was completely discouraged. My mother, reflecting an attitude from her youth, said, "don't learn to type, or you'll end up doing it all the time". So I bagged it.

Many years after that, I just had to admit to myself that I wanted to touch type for my productivity and convenience. Especially while working on a yearlong contract with a team in India, I was in regular Instant Message meetings in the middle of the night. Sitting in front of the computer in the dark and needing to type was one of several catalysts which led me to realize it was time for me to learn to touch type.

I researched and found that since I hadn't learned QWERTY, why not learn the easier more logical layout? For years already, switching on Windows machines was a simple couple of steps, and on the Mac, it was only a System Preference choice - plus you can toggle between the two.

In 2005 I got a very strong chest cold that I could tell I was going to have for several weeks. I purchased Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor and applied myself with much excitement and dedication to practicing every day. It was very easy and even fun to practice. Within 2 weeks I was at 35 or 40 words a minute, I typed my first accurate line at 80 words a minute somewhere around 2 months after beginning with the tutor program. Before, the fastest line I could type was about 50 words a minute, and I had to watch the keys. They say that a person that already types well with QWERTY will be able to learn much more quickly than someone learning touch typing for the first time.

I am super delighted, it truly makes so much more sense than QUERTY and I wish that more parents and children were educated about the choice to use DVORAK. My fingers hardly move when I type now, and I remember from the typing class when I was 12 that QWERTY made my hands do all these big contorting diagonal reaches. i am very happy with my decision an would recommend starting up with DVORAK, or switching to it if you want more comfortable typing.

Enjoy!
